He Can Do It All: Casual Outfits For Mens Headshots

When I met Chad Chapman at a tech company sales kick off event, little did I know what else had just kicked off. Ten years, one marriage, a child, and a multitude of adventures later, I've learned that this man really can do it all (of course, I'm speaking as his #1 fan!).

Before I list my husband's accolades, I want to highlight that this is a blog post about what to wear for a casual look during a headshot session.

The first, and most relevant characteristics of my husband is his ability to wear an outfit.  Whether it's a tailor made suit, or a sweatsuit, he wears it well.  Take the above magazine cover as an example; this simple outfit is casual, comfortable, yet magazine worthy.

These images are taken after a recent annual event that my husband hosts called 'Music on The Farm'.  As a saxophone player and student of music, one of his top inspirational artists is Marvin Gaye.  This shoot and outfit was somewhat inspired by Marvin Gayes 'Lets Get It On' album art.

The fit

The Hat: Bricks & Wood

The Shirt: Suitsupply

The Pants: Banana Republic

The Watch: Baltic

A few simple pieces that together made this casual look eye catching. This look has followed three simple rules:

1. Choose colors that complement each other. This doesn't mean they need to be different shades of the same color, but that the colors don't compete for attention. For instance, Chad's outfit skillfully pairs a bold red hat with a muted, blue shirt and neutral-toned pants. The harmony between these colors creates a visually appealing balance that draws the eye without overwhelming it. It's a lesson in subtlety that can make or break a headshot or portrait.

2. Combine different textures. The soft fabric of this Egyptian cotton shirt is complemented by the contrasting knit texture of the hat. The interplay between the smooth, sleek shirt and the cozy, textured hat adds depth and dimension to the outfit. Adding layers of texture not only makes the ensemble more interesting to look at but also translates well in photographs, giving the image a rich, tactile quality.

3. Solid colors.  Although some patterns can work just fine in a portrait-style image, solid colors provide variation without being distracting. In Chad’s case, the unadorned tones of his outfit ensure that the focus remains on him rather than on any potentially distracting patterns. Solid colors are timeless and versatile, making them a reliable choice for any headshot session. This approach helps to keep the attention on the subject’s face and expressions, which is crucial for a memorable and impactful headshot.

By adhering to these three simple yet effective rules, Chad’s casual look becomes magazine-worthy, demonstrating how a well-thought-out outfit can elevate your appearance in any setting.

The Man

From running scales on his saxophone to mastering gourmet cocktails, Chad’s diverse talents and unwavering determination never cease to amaze me. His career has soared to impressive heights, yet he remains grounded, always prioritizing family and friends. Whether he's closing a major deal, hosting a concert on a farm, or simply making us laugh with his quick wit, Chad embodies a rare blend of charisma, intelligence, and kindness.

Although Chad is magazine worthy on a daily basis, it's his internal qualities that maintain my status as his #1 fan.
